Lauren Griffiths, Danielle Hazell and Heather Knight made their Test debuts for England in the women’s Ashes in Sydney today.

Griffiths has kept wicket in all matches of the recent One Day International and Twenty20 series, alongside spinner Hazell and opening batsman Knight.

Danielle Hazell said: “I’m thrilled to receive my first Test cap for England. It’s an exciting opportunity to be playing in an Ashes Test.

“I really hope to pick up my first Test wickets out here, that would be special.

“Hopefully we can follow the lead of the England men and bring two Ashes titles home this winter.”

Knight today opened the batting in the 44th Test between England women and Australia women as the tourists look to retain the Ashes.

Heather Knight said: “This is a moment I have been working towards and is the pinnacle of the tour for me.

“We don’t get to play Test cricket very often so I’m looking forward to the challenge and the chance to experience the longer format of the game.

“I hope this is the first Test of many that I will play for England.”

Cheshire’s Lauren Griffiths said: “I’ve been given some great opportunities on this tour but playing in the Ashes Test is the highlight.

“I’m really looking forward to getting out there in my whites.”

The women’s Ashes Test will be played at Bankstown, Sydney from January 22-25, 2011.
