Weekend May 21-22

Another busy weekend of cricket has been played we 4 out of the 5 teams due to play.

Under 13’s

The 13s continue their run of good form at the moment with yet another win. They beat Essex on a very windy day at Southend but the game was getting close until Sussex pulled it back and took some crucial wickets. Sussex batted first and scored 139 before being bowled out in 23 overs. Opener Tara Norris topped scored for Sussex with 17, while Ellen Burt and Isabella Nixon both scored 11. Sussex were helped with reaching this score with Essex bowling 55 wides!

Essex came back fighting and were on course, they were 74 for 4 with overs to spare, but Sussex came back and took wickets regularly and bowling Essex out for 109. Eleanor Monk & Molly Beadle were the pick of the bowlers, Eleanor taking 3 for 5 and Molly 3 for 8, while Jessica Saunders took 2 for 18.

The 13s have won 3 out of 3 and are currently top of the table!

Under 15’s

The 15s put in an excellent performance against Surrey on Saturday and won by 138 runs. Sussex batted first and after losing a couple of wickets early on, Izi Collis and Abi Quinn came in and steady the ship! Abi put in an impressive performance and was the pick of the batters, scoring 59 off 73 balls. She was well supported by Izi Collis (24), Alicia Caillard (24), Megan Janman (29not out) and Paige Scholfield (24 not out). Sussex finished on 227 for 5 off their 35 overs.

The last few games has seen Sussex bowling struggle but this week they put in an all round performance, with everyone chipping in and playing an important part with the ball. Surrey were bowled out for 89 with off spinner, Charlotte Allcock taking 3 for 6, Paige Scholfield 2 for 13 and Abi Byrne 2 for 2 in 4 balls!!

Sussex are currently second in the table after playing 3 matches and winning 2, they are close behind Kent who have only played 1 match and are top of the table!!!

Under 17s’

The 17s were due to play their first match on Monday away to Oxfordshire. Driving up to Oxford the weather was good, until we arrived in Oxford at 10am and the rain started. We were hoping the rain might stop and we would get some sort of game in, but after 3 hours of watching it rain, the game was abandoned. We are looking to re-arrange the match for a later date.

Seniors

The seniors had their first County Championship match on Sunday at Brighton College against Kent and were looking to start with a win to start their campaign to retain the County Championship. But Sussex lost to Kent by 9 wickets, in a game dominated by Kent. Sussex batted first and lost 5 wickets with 43 runs on the board. Lucy Uncles and Georgia Elwiss then started to bring Sussex back and built a good partnership before Lucy Uncles was caught for 27. Georgia soon fell LBW for 26 and soon Sussex were all out for 105.

Sussex openers Alexia Walker and Georgia Elwiss bowled extremely well and kept the visitors runs down at the start and were both unlucky not to take a wicket. Alexia bowled through and going for only 22 off her 10 and Elwiss went for 16 off 8.

Holly Colvin was to take the only wicket of the game, but Charlotte Edwards lead her team to victory with 64 not out. Holly finished with figures of 1 for 10 off 5.
