Weekend May 28-29

We had 4 matches played last week and we won 3, lost 1 and 1 was abandoned.

Under 11s:

The under 11s had two matches last week, both against Middlesex, one against their development side and the other their full under 11 side. The girls travelled up to Middlesex on the Thursday to play their development side. Sussex won the toss and decided to bowl first and after 25 overs, Middlesex had reached 64 for 9. Everyone in the Sussex team (apart from the wicket keeper) bowled and all of them bowled well, the pick of the bowlers were Rebecca Bonanate 2 for 3 off 4, Amelia Baron 2 for 8, Lauren Fisher, Brook Williams, Georgina Humphreys, Zanzibar menzies and Gabrielle Wickham all took a wicket a piece.

Sussex reached their total very quickly and it was decided they would carry on until 15 overs where they finished on 94 for 5 with Ella Bourne (28) and Ellie Robinson (11) both being retired.

The girls then faced Middlesex full under 11 side on Sunday at lancing College. However the weather was not on our side, after playing 15 overs the match had to be abandoned due to the weather. When the match was abandoned, Middlesex were 61 for 4 with Ella Bourne, Ellie Robinson, Georgina Leefe and Anna Chalmers all took 1 wicket.

Under 15s:

The 15s played Essex at Lancing College on Saturday and struggled this week and lost by 55 runs. Essex batted first and opener Grace Melhuish was unstoppable with the bat for Essex, scoring 102 before being run out, she helped Essex reach 185 for 4 (just goes to show how much of the ball she had if she scored 102 and we bowled 26 wides). Paige Scholfield was the pick of the bowler for Sussex taking 2 for 16 off 7 overs. Three players reached double figures, but it was not enough to reach the 185, Sussex only reached 130 for 8 off their 35 overs. Abi Freeborn scored 25, Abi Quinn 23 and Megan Janman 22.

Under 17s:

The 17s had their first Championship match last Friday against Surrey after they had their match against Oxford called off due to the weather and they started off with a bang. Alexia kindly stepped in for me to coach the side last week and I think I should now sack myself!!!

Sussex won the toss and elected to field first and Surrey were soon 3 wickets down for 1 run and it wasn’t long before the were 5 down for 10 runs. The girls bowled consistently well and bowled Surrey out for 46, with Sophie Parnell taking 3 for 8, Jade Elphick 3 for 6, Chiara Green 1 for 4 and Sam Wright 1 for 8.

It wasn’t long before the girls reached the total and were on their way home, it only took 6 overs. Chiara Green went out there from ball one and decided she was not going to stick around, she finished on 30 not out off 19 balls

Seniors:

The seniors had their second County Championship match away to Notts and looked to get their first win under their belt. Notts won the toss and put Sussex in. Hannah Phelps and Caroline Atkins opened the batting and after losing Hannah early on, Rosalie Birch came in and put on a good partnership with Caroline before being caught for 42. Sussex then lost 5 quick wickets and with 14 year old Izi Collis making her debut for the seniors this weekend she put in a crucial performance with the bat, especially coming in when the bowler was on a hat-trick. She put on a partnership with Caroline before being caught on 21. Sussex reached 182 for 8 off their 50 overs with Caroline 82 not out.

Opening bowlers Alexia Walker and Sophie Parnell bowled well in partnership at the start, and Alexia took the first wicket after the second ball leaving Notts 2 for 1. Sophie then followed Alexia soon after bowling a Yorker and taking the second wicket.

Holly Colvin is continuing to bowl well and making it difficult for batsman to score runs off her, after her first 5 overs she had taken 1 wicket for 1 run!!!

At one stage it did look like it was getting close but after the openers were brought back they finished off the job and Notts were bowled out for 163 with only 3 balls left. Sophie Parnell took 3 for 44, Alexia Walker 2 for 32, Holly Colvin 2 for 20 with 5 maidens and Charlotte Russell 2 for 16.
