We had 3 games at the
weekend and 2 wins and 1 loss.
The 11s played Middlesex away and won by 22 runs. Sussex won the toss and
sent Middlesex to field in the hottest weather this year!!! (very tactical I
think!!!). The girls batted well and finished on 116 for 4.
Everyone was given the opportunity to bowl (except the wicket keeper I
believe) and the wickets were shared about. But it was the fielding that
stood out on this day as there were 3 run outs all from direct hits!! From
what I have heard the fielding was outstanding with the girls working in
pairs on the boundary and returning the ball quickly to the wicket keeper. I
know when I saw them a couple of weeks ago, the fielding was brilliant.
Middlesex reached 94 for 9 in their 25 overs.
After 4 consecutive wins, the under 13s lost their first match this Sunday
and as a result I have been banned from seeing them play again!!!! They
played away to Surrey and I went to see them for the first time this season,
so I am being blamed for the loss!!!
Anyway Sussex batted first and all the batters struggled with the straight
ball. With the bowling being slow and the ball getting stuck in the pitch
and not coming up like you would hope the girls played back and were bowled!
After their 30 overs Sussex reached 108 for 9 with Izi Nixon putting in a
good performance at the end with 19 not out and Tia Penny being very
attacking in the middle order scoring 16, unfortunately these were the only
two players to make double figures.
Sussex started well with the ball, with Ellen Burt taking a wicket on her
second ball, she is one player to keep an eye on, she bowls consistently
well, with good pace and the batsman struggled to make contact with the
ball. The good thing is she has started to grow even more since the winter
and looks like a good fast bowler for the future.
The umpires were being very strict on the wides and anything down leg was a
wide. Our bowling was good we bowled a good line and length but gave away
too many bad balls and dropped a few catches and missed a couple of chances
. Surrey reached 110 for 5 in 23.3 overs. Eleanor Monk took 2 for 19 and
Ellen Burt 1 for 12 off 6 overs.
I know the 13s will come back this week and they are all very determined to
win this week (don’t worry I won’t be there!!)
The 17s finally played their second match after a number of games have been
rained off!! They were at home to Essex at Blackstone. We lost the toss and
were put in on a slow wicket. We lost Chiara and Carla early on, but Sophie
Parnell and Kirstin Mair started to build a partnership on a very difficult
pitch, they put on 33 before Sophie was bowled, Kirtsin was soon bowled on
23 and we then lost 3 quick wickets and we were on 88 for 8 off about 24
overs. Essex were bowling very short and the ball was sticking in the pitch
and we were being bowled with the ball keeping very low and not getting up.
Megan Janman and Jade Elphick did what was asked of them, a target of 140
was set and they were told to see the overs out and they did not fail, they
built a very good partnership and played very sensibly and they waited for
the bad balls and they kept rotating the strike. They put on a partnership
of 68 with Megan scoring 35 not out and Jade 15 not out and leading Sussex
to 156 for 8 in the 45 overs.
Sussex bowled well and Izi Noakes took the first wicket in her second over.
The girls bowled a good line and length and kept plugging away. Essex were
73 for 2 with a lot of overs in hand, Chiara Green bowled really well, she
got the ball to turn and got good flight on the ball and was unlucky not to
take a couple of wickets. Jade Elphick and Georgina Monk came onto bowl and
caused problems for Essex, Georgina took the wicket of opening batsman
Bryony Butcher who batted very well for 50. Wickets then began to fall
regularly, Essex were 83 for 3 and after 45 overs they reached 127 for 9 and
Sussex won by 27 runs. Jade Elphick took 3 for 10 off 7 overs, Georgina Monk
2 for 30, Izi Noakes 2 for 24, Chiara Green 0 for 20 off 9 overs.
There are 2 matches this weekend:
Saturday 2nd July – Under 13s v Essex at Lancing College – 2pm start
Saturday 2nd July – Under 15s v Kent away – 2pm start
If you don’t know already (I would be in shock if you didn’t know) England
won the T20 quad series on Monday. Sussex players Holly Colvin and Sarah
Taylor did Sussex proud, Sarah was awarded player of the match against
Australia on Saturday for her outstanding wicket keeping. Holly was awarded
player of the match on Thursday against New Zealand for her 3 wickets and
run out. Holly was also awarded player of the series on Monday for her 7
wickets and economy rate of 4.55 per over. Well done girls and good luck for
the ODI series starting today at Derby.
Also it was announced yesterday that Georgia Elwiss has been called into the
England squad to replace injured Jenny Gunn, I am sure you will join me in
wishing Georgia the best.
